This year I started with some favorites of mine, all mostly 33 1/3 rpm, all 12 inch vinyl LPs:

Other albums I’ve been really into as of late are Stratosphere by Duster. I’ve been in a haze keeping this late 90’s album on repeat. Notably, I wanna swim in the drones of “Echo, Bravo”. That thundering synchronization of heavy thud and distortion is everything. Of course, you’ve got to play Catch For Us The Foxes by mewithoutYou if but only to hear “January 1979” in January, “you watch me like a ten car highway wreck with detached, vulgar curiosity” is perchance a frequent persona of mine. They Are Gutting a Body of Water’s 2025’s LOTTO has been a daily driver for me as of late, too, the thunderous death punch of it’s opening track “the chase” is enough to shock the nervous system, this is music that demands your attention through melodic low hum vocals that sound like apocalyptic contingency instruction plans played along heavy riffing guitars that leave a piercing resonance. And if you know me, you know I’m keeping What It Takes To Move Forward by empire! empire! (i was a lonely estate) on repeat, “remember the flowers you picked when we crossed over Madison?”—I mean, how could you not in January.

With only a few days of the first month of the year left, what have you been listening to?

]]><![CDATA[Blue, vibrations of the city...]]>https://jimmyvega777.substack.com/p/blue-vibrations-of-the-cityhttps://jimmyvega777.substack.com/p/blue-vibrations-of-the-citySun, 30 Nov 2025 19:40:05 GMTBlue, vibrations of the city, Dodger baseball, smell of burnt gasoline, fast cars, line drives, opportunity, burning palm dreams, dusky Dodger blue, color reminds of possibility, savory oak pine tar, freeway dreams, deafening crack of a bat, Watts, 108th street, fresh lumber from shipping yard, a job, a blessing, thicker xmas till we get through the end of December, no regrets no new year’s resolutions, blue Dodger hat reminds me of my tios, of my primos, of low rider bikes chromed out glistening sun kissed y colonia, lest we forget Chavez Ravine, La Loma, Bishop, Palo Verde, neighborhoods bulldozed and desecrated for a colonial home base. However messy and amalgamated this color, the symbols and the material, the fans, the game, the Dodgers remind me of mi papá Pancho. I search for him in the city, in the vibrations of the crowd, in the roar of ocean, in a sea of Dodger blue.

It’s Monday night and the band playing at the Roxy is The Sound of Animals Fighting, a supergroup experimental, post hardcore, progressive, art rock band with Anthony Green at the helm, founded by Rich Balling of RX Bandits along with other members of the band and members from Good Old War, Chiodos, among other artists, friends, etc. They never really play and in their early days hardly did. I dare say they are one of my favorite bands that is still active, despite their elusiveness.

By 7:30 we decide that we wouldn’t go out—not tonight, amidst these curious circumstances: like the half-baked moon, my hazy anxious worry, the slight belly ache of fear—would I need to mention this to my therapist I wondered…knowing very well that if my psychiatrist knew he’d feed it to the AI machine he keeps mentioning. I wonder if I experience mild symptoms of agoraphobia, feeling at ease knowing we’d stay-in tonight. Not accepting relief, I keep feeling like I’d just made some sort of mistake, so I take the typewriter out and make a night out of it, miserable, I mope:

Basically, it just sucks getting old. Now obsessed with digital devices such as phones, laptops, tablets and in my moment of outward spirals—coming right as the guillotine slams—

I scribble with my fountain pen to create a little universe of ink before I tell my love about how in the afternoon, I was dancing in the sun only later to come in doors and see the kitchen and the library in blue. When I close my eyes and look towards the orange fireball in the sky my phosphenes flutter radiant anticipation, rhizomes of magic bow to the glowing luminous orb and blush. My love mentions the conditions of free will and demonstrates the action in praxis, so we make vegan tuna and listen to the latest Sound of Animals Fighting record on the house computer without having to be around strangers in a dimly lit Hollywood venue.

What to eat for dinner, a poem of Will Alexander’s that mentions samsara, and I ponder while I look at the high ceiling darkness, still not ever attending a show at the Roxy, especially now ever since the ducks left.

“since the ducks left” borrowed line spoken by Tony Soparano in Season 1, episode 1 of The Sopranos.
